Duration at key distances

Including common imperial distances for comparison.

How pace relates to finish time

Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, usually one kilometre or one mile. Once you know your pace, each finish time is just that pace multiplied by the distance.

Workout Writer uses pace, heart rate, power, cadence, and other targets when you build structured running workouts, so this calculator is a quick way to sanity-check the speeds you want to use in a session.

Running Pace Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a running finish time from pace?

Multiply your pace by the race distance. For example, a 5:00 per kilometre pace gives a 25:00 5K and a 50:00 10K. This calculator does the conversion for common race and track distances.

Can I switch between minutes per kilometre and minutes per mile?

Yes. Switch between metric and imperial units and the calculator keeps the same underlying speed, so you can compare pace and finish times without changing the effort.

What is a good running pace for a 5K?

A good 5K pace depends on your current fitness and goal. Use the 5K result above to compare target times, then build workouts around that pace in Workout Writer.

How do I plan workouts using my goal race pace?

Convert your goal finish time into a pace, then use that pace for intervals, tempo runs, and race-pace blocks. Workout Writer can turn those targets into structured sessions you can send to Apple Watch or Garmin Connect.

Can Workout Writer send pace-based workouts to my watch?

Yes. Workout Writer supports pace targets for structured running workouts, alongside heart rate, power, cadence, and other targets. See the units and conversion guide for more detail.
